During CBS Sports’ coverage of the Champions League on Tuesday, Harry Kane lightheartedly contradicted a claim made by Jamie Carragher. The former Liverpool defender had earlier stated on the panel, which also included Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, and host Kate Abdo, that he had personally spoken with Kane ahead of Bayern Munich’s crucial second-leg match against Lazio in the round of 16. Bayern, seeking to reverse a 1-0 deficit from their first leg in Rome, relied on a two-goal performance from Kane to secure a convincing 3-0 victory.
In a post-match interview with CBS, Abdo immediately addressed Carragher’s claim. “Before we proceed, we need to clarify something. Jamie stated earlier that he had a phone conversation with you this week. Could you confirm or deny that?” she inquired.
Kane, with a hint of amusement, responded, “That statement is, in fact, false.” The England captain’s denial elicited laughter from Henry and Richards, while Carragher playfully protested, “H, please don’t expose me like this!”
“I’m telling everyone in America that we’re friends, that we’ve got a great relationship. I can’t believe you have just done that to me!”
Following a lively exchange on a nationally televised sports broadcast, Harry Kane clarified the nature of his relationship with Jamie Carragher. After Carragher suggested a close friendship, Kane good-naturedly countered, “We are friends, but I’m not going to misrepresent our relationship on national television!” He further explained, “We primarily communicate through Twitter messages–you could call us ‘Twitter friends’.”
Carragher, in a lighthearted manner, responded, “See Kate [presumably the host], we’re Twitter friends!” Kane later took to social media, posting, “Sorry @Carra23, the truth will always come out,” accompanied by playful laughing emojis.
