Former West Ham and Celtic striker, Frank McAvennie, didn’t mince words when addressing the performance and attitude of certain Manchester United players following their recent Premier League loss to Fulham. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McAvennie singled out Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Anthony Martial, alleging that these players have shown reluctance to play under manager Erik ten Hag.
McAvennie’s critique arrives amidst a turbulent season for Manchester United, with ten Hag facing substantial scrutiny amid disappointing results. The squad, too, has faced criticism for their lackluster displays and perceived failure to live up to the standards expected of Manchester United players.
Bruno Fernandes, often seen engaging in on-field disputes with match officials, has drawn particular ire, as has Marcus Rashford, whose off-field actions have recently been subject to scrutiny. The team’s lack of cohesion and commitment has been evident on the pitch, prompting McAvennie to describe the situation as “embarrassing” for the club.
As Manchester United continues to navigate a challenging season, McAvennie’s frank assessment underscores the pressing need for a turnaround in performance and mentality among the squad.
“Man United dressing room mutiny as stars turn against Ten Hag” – McAvennie points fingers at five United stars with undesirable attitudes, hinting at a broader issue impacting the team’s performance.
“They’ve not got good enough players,” he told Football Insider.
“Ten Hag has players there that do not want to work.
“Antony, Anthony Martial – these boys do not want to work for the club or play for the manager.
“Scott McTominay fights tooth and nail for Scotland, but he doesn’t for Man United.
“The captain, Bruno Fernandes, he’s a bad example of a captain. “He’s punching the ground and arguing with referees and everyone – it’s embarrassing for the captain of Man United to do that.
“You can’t imagine Roy Keane doing that, but what are you doing Fernandes?
“Rashford [against Luton Town] – he’s just jogging around and not putting a tackle in.
“It was an embarrassment, it was really terrible.
“These are the kind of players that they don’t need at Man United.”
