Inter Milan’s captain, Lautaro Martinez, has exhibited remarkable performance in the current Serie A season, having scored 22 goals in 23 league matches. This achievement positions him as a serious contender to challenge the Serie A goal-scoring record jointly held by Ciro Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain.
Martinez showcased his prowess in Inter Milan’s recent Serie A fixture against Lecce, where he contributed significantly with two goals, aiding his team to a commanding 4-0 victory in Puglia. These goals marked his 21st and 22nd of the ongoing league campaign, firmly establishing him as the frontrunner in the Capocannoniere race.
With a pending match against Atalanta, Inter Milan, under the management of Simone Inzaghi, has 13 matches remaining in the season. Presently, they hold a nine-point advantage over second-placed Juventus, a lead that could potentially extend to 12 points should they secure victory against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta side.
It is highlighted by TMW that Martinez now has 13 opportunities to score 14 goals, aiming to equal the record of 36 goals set by Higuain during the 2015-16 season at Napoli and Immobile during the 2019-20 campaign with Lazio.
Considering that only a minor portion of Martinez’s goals this season (two out of 22) have been from penalty kicks, there is considerable optimism regarding his ability to break the record if he maintains his current scoring rate and potentially assumes penalty-taking responsibilities for the remainder of the season.
