Chelsea continue their talent raid on Brighton, appointing Sam Jewell as a senior figure in their multi-club recruitment team. Jewell, Brighton’s Head of Recruitment after Paul Winstanley’s departure to Chelsea, will join the Blues after serving his notice period in November.
The 34-year-old was lured by a global role within Chelsea’s expanding structure overseen by co-sporting directors Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. This move further emphasizes the sweeping changes underway at the club since the Boehly-Clearlake takeover in 2022.
Jewell’s arrival coincides with the expected arrival of Josh Marsh as Chelsea’s new loans manager. Despite inconsistent results on the pitch, the club remains committed to Winstanley and Stewart’s long-term strategy built around acquiring young talent.
Data-driven scouting and a bolstered analytics department are key goals, where Brighton’s successful recruitment model holds great appeal. Notably, Graham Potter’s short-lived reign saw several members of his Brighton staff join Chelsea, highlighting the Blues’ admiration for their approach.
This marks another instance of Chelsea tapping into Brighton’s talent pool, following acquisitions like Marc Cucurella, Moisés Caicedo, and Robert Sánchez in recent years. Jewell, son of former manager Paul Jewell, played a key role in bringing Caicedo and spotting rising star Alexis Mac Allister.
Chelsea’s continued recruitment from Brighton underscores their strategic shift and highlights their belief in the Seagulls’ talent-identification expertise. While the financial benefits for Brighton are evident, the Blues hope Jewell’s expertise will contribute to their long-term ambitions.
