Liverpool’s chances of providing Jurgen Klopp with a perfect farewell in the Europa League final in Dublin next month are currently in jeopardy.
Klopp recently announced his departure from the club at the end of the season, and his team was eager to prolong the campaign until the final on 22 May. However, a surprising 3-0 loss at home to Atalanta in the first leg of the quarter-finals has made that outcome seem unlikely at the moment.
Klopp, who has led Liverpool to three Champions League finals, including a victory in 2019, appeared stunned at the end of the match and showed his appreciation to the fans before leaving the field.
Could this have been his final European match at Anfield, following Liverpool’s first home defeat since February 2023, when they lost 5-2 to Real Madrid in the Champions League, thus ending their 33-game unbeaten streak?
Liverpool’s display was marred by numerous errors and inadequate defensive marking, resulting in their equal-worst home defeat in significant European tournaments, with the previous instances occurring against Real Madrid.
Atalanta, currently occupying the sixth position in the Serie A standings and trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 32 points, capitalized on the situation with a clinical performance.
They are now heavily favored to advance to the semi-finals after the upcoming second leg clash in Italy next Thursday.
