Liverpool and their winger Luis Díaz find themselves at a crucial juncture this summer, as they must make a decision regarding the extension of the Colombian’s contract or potentially selling him.
This dilemma arises due to the interest shown by Paris St-Germain and other clubs in acquiring the talented player.
Since his arrival from Porto for a fee of approximately £37.5 million during the January 2022 transfer window, the 27-year-old Díaz has proven to be a resounding success at Liverpool.
Notably, he shares the same agent, Raul Costa, with Ruben Amorim, who is considered a potential successor to Jürgen Klopp. Costa recently made a trip to Britain to visit his client on Merseyside.
Despite enjoying two fruitful years at the club, Díaz has yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension to replace his initial deal signed upon his arrival.
Although he will remain under contract for three more years at the end of this season, it is likely that both parties will need to determine whether he will stay for the long term or seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
PSG is considered to be one club that has shown interest, as well as Barcelona. However, due to Barcelona’s financial situation, it may be challenging for them to offer Liverpool the desired fee. Liverpool values Díaz at approximately £75 million.
Although he suffered a knee injury and missed seven months of last season, he has made a strong comeback this term with eight goals and four assists in 30 Premier League appearances, along with five additional goals in other competitions.
Klopp specifically praised Díaz for scoring an equalizer at Luton Town last November, especially considering the difficult family situation he faced when both his parents were kidnapped in Colombia before being eventually released.
Selling players at the right time has become equally important as acquiring new ones and extending contracts, especially considering the financial constraints imposed by profit and sustainability regulations.
Reports indicate that there is no unofficial agreement between Liverpool and Amorim regarding the managerial position, despite the Sporting Lisbon coach being considered for the role.
With Xabi Alonso out of the running, other candidates such as Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton and possibly Germany’s manager Julian Nagelsmann are now in the mix.
