Palmer: Grant likely to leave West Brom
Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer posits that Karlan Grant is poised to depart the club on loan once more during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Grant has emerged as one of the more consistent performers for Cardiff City throughout the current season, albeit falling short of the anticipated goal-scoring tally.
Despite still being bound by a two-year contract at The Hawthorns, Palmer opines that Baggies’ manager Carlos Corberan is inclined to authorize another loan spell for Grant in the forthcoming summer transfer window. Furthermore, Palmer suggests that if Erol Bulut assumes control at Cardiff, a subsequent loan arrangement might align with the Bluebirds’ interests, although certain variables must be clarified before such an outcome can materialize.
In an interview with Football League World, Palmer remarked, “Karlan Grant is slated to engage in discussions with Carlos Corberan regarding his future and the potentiality of his return to West Bromwich Albion.”
Elaborating on Grant’s situation, Palmer stated, “When I mention ‘return to West Bromwich Albion,’ it’s noteworthy that he remains under contract for two more years. He has spent the season on loan at Cardiff, where he has evidently relished his time and has openly expressed his satisfaction.”
“However, his goal-scoring output has been modest, with only five goals despite featuring prominently in the majority of matches. Consequently, his standing at West Brom has diminished, raising doubts about his inclusion in their future plans.”
Palmer reflected on Grant’s past achievements, stating, “At one juncture, Karlan displayed exceptional form for West Brom, amassing 18 goals during the 2021/22 campaign. Yet, he has encountered challenges since then, albeit retaining his innate talent. With West Brom’s progression, there may be an opportunity for Grant to rediscover his form and contribute positively.”
Discussing the underlying factors behind Grant’s potential departure, Palmer mentioned, “Part of the impetus for Grant’s temporary exit could be attributed to financial considerations, particularly his substantial wages. Therefore, the outcome of negotiations remains uncertain. It’s evident that Carlos harbored reservations about Grant, leading to his loan departure. Hence, the ensuing developments will be contingent upon various factors.”
“In light of his contractual obligations and significant wage package, facilitating Grant’s departure won’t be straightforward. Consequently, the prevailing likelihood is that Grant will be permitted to embark on another season-long loan stint in the forthcoming campaign.”
Goalkeeper coach leaves
James Wood, who previously served as the first-team goalkeeping coach at the club, has departed from his position.
Wood, the offspring of former Cardiff City goalkeeper George Wood, assumed the role of first-team goalkeeper coach last season following the departure of Graham Stack under the tenure of Sabri Lamouchi.
Following the appointment of Mario Galinovic as the first-team goalkeeper coach under the management of Bulut and Co, Wood reverted to his previous role as an academy coach. Wood has been involved in coaching within City’s academy since 2018.
In a statement shared on social media over the weekend, Wood expressed gratitude for his time at Cardiff City, stating: “Today marked my last day at Cardiff City, what a journey it has been since the day it started. To coach my hometown club at all levels was a dream. I’ve met wonderful people along the way who’ve become friends. Can’t thank my colleagues enough, it’s been a blast. Onto the next journey.”
Warnock ‘not contacted’ by Plymouth
Neil Warnock expressed his willingness to assume the managerial role at Plymouth Argyle until the conclusion of the season but revealed that he was not approached for the position. Following the dismissal of head coach Ian Foster over the Easter weekend, a decision spurred by the team’s recent defeat to Bristol City after just 14 league matches, speculation arose regarding Warnock’s potential appointment. With Warnock having recently departed Aberdeen, many viewed him as an ideal candidate to guide Plymouth Argyle through their remaining six games and potentially secure their safety in the Championship. Plymouth Argyle currently occupies the 21st position in the league table, with a precarious one-point margin above the relegation zone.
In an interview with BBC Cornwall, Warnock disclosed his readiness to undertake the role had he been approached, emphasizing the quality of Plymouth’s players and expressing confidence in their ability to avoid relegation once organized, particularly highlighting the contributions of Whittaker. Acknowledging the financial significance of remaining in the Championship, Warnock affirmed his affection for the club, citing his attendance at games with his daughter Amy and expressing his desire for the team’s success. He pledged his support by committing to attend future matches and rooting for favorable outcomes, underscoring his deep-seated affinity for Plymouth Argyle.
