Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late penalty to secure a crucial point for Everton in their fight against relegation in a draw against Newcastle, who are chasing a spot in Europe.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute after receiving a pass from Harvey Barnes, evading Jarrad Branthwaite, and calmly finishing past Jordan Pickford.
Dan Burn had a goal disallowed for offside, and Isak saw another effort cleared off the line before Everton were awarded a penalty late in the game. Paul Dummett was penalized for pulling Ashley Young to the ground with his arm around his neck.
Referee Tony Harrington initially did not award the penalty but changed his decision after consulting the VAR monitor on the sidelines.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe accepted the decision, stating that the height of Dummett’s arm around Young’s neck influenced the call.
On the other hand, Everton manager Sean Dyche questioned the delay in awarding the penalty.
Despite the draw, Everton remain in 16th place in the Premier League, moving four points clear of 18th-placed Luton Town, who will face Arsenal on Wednesday.
The result, however, extended Everton’s winless streak in the Premier League to 13 matches, setting an unwanted club record.
