The recent documentary film by Manchester City has revealed some intriguing habits of Erling Haaland during his debut season at the Etihad.
In the summer of 2022, Erling Haaland joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £51 million. During his inaugural season, Haaland exploded onto the scene with 52 goals for Guardiola’s side. He contributed significantly to The Citizens’ historic treble, which included the coveted Champions League title, a feat long sought by the club.
This journey has been chronicled in the newly aired documentary titled “Together: Treble Winners.” One segment depicts Haaland bringing a bonsai tree into the training ground, aiming to uplift the team’s spirits.
“The bonsai tree will serve as our energy source. It’s like we’re drawing energy from the tree and transferring it into our bodies. It’s a lucky charm for us,” shared Haaland.
In many cultures, particularly in Japan and China, the bonsai tree is regarded as a symbol of peace and harmony. The bonsai tree has been placed in Manchester City’s physiotherapy room, and all players take care of it. Haaland believes this practice has provided motivation for the team during challenging times.
Teammate John Stones added, “Haaland wants it that way. He thinks the tree will be beneficial for the physiotherapy room. Sometimes it’s placed in the sauna room, that’s also Haaland’s idea. Everyone pays attention to it and takes care of it. It has gradually become a habit; if you enter the room without watering the tree, we’ll feel a bit uncomfortable.”
The documentary also captures Haaland participating in preseason training with the team and a private unveiling ceremony at a hotel in July. During the event, the Norwegian forward performed Enrique Iglesias’ hit song “Hero” for his teammates. It’s evident from the beginning that this striker quickly integrated and garnered much goodwill from his new teammates.
Additionally, the documentary records various other noteworthy scenes, including a moment where coach Pep Guardiola speaks to the players before the Champions League final against Inter in June.
“I know how much you dream about this. I know how well we’ve all performed. The treble has only happened once in 150 years of English football – only one team has achieved that. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment for you all, this moment, it won’t come again,” said Guardiola.
