Napoli’s sporting director, Mauro Meluso, issued an apology on behalf of the players following their 3-0 home defeat against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta on Saturday afternoon. Meluso emphasized that the team has eight remaining matches in the 2023-24 season to honor the club’s dedicated supporters.
Despite Napoli hitting the woodwork twice, first-half goals from Aleksei Miranchuk, Gianluca Scamacca, and a late strike from Teun Koopmeiners condemned the Partenopei to a disappointing loss on home turf.
Speaking in front of the DAZN cameras after the match, Meluso addressed the media, stating, “We have eight matches left to show our appreciation to our supporters, but we regret this significant defeat in front of our fans. Let us focus on our weekly objectives without dwelling excessively. Certain discussions should be postponed for another time.”
Meluso’s reference to discussions pertained to inquiries about star midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who is poised to join Inter on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
When pressed further about Zielinski and the upcoming summer transfer market, Meluso remarked, “We must transcend conventional approaches. There has been no conflict or resistance from Zielinski, and we have respected his desires. Throughout the various coaching changes this season, we have consistently emphasized the importance of meritocracy.”
Reflecting on the defeat against Atalanta, Meluso expressed, “The loss is disheartening for the team and the technical staff. We anticipated a different outcome this year. Something was amiss, but now is not the time for detailed discussion.”
He continued, “We hope the team swiftly regains its momentum. Our performance lacked vigor today, particularly in the first half. The second goal dashed our hopes. Nonetheless, we acknowledge our defeat. Today, my intention is to shield the players from undue scrutiny.”
“In Naples, motivation never wanes; the fervor of the supporters is palpable. The players must reignite their passion. Despite facing challenges, we have made progress under Calzona’s leadership. We aim to string together a series of victories, but the lackluster first half has left us perplexed.”
