The left-back position has presented an ongoing challenge for Manchester United throughout the season, primarily due to persistent injury concerns involving Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.
According to Romano, Manchester United intends to address this issue by securing a new signing for the left-back position. Romano stated, “Manchester United will sign a left-back because they are aware of Tyrell Malacia’s struggles, as well as the injuries suffered by Luke Shaw this season. They will seek a young, talented, and significant left-back.”
This plan aligns with the club’s objectives and has received approval from the manager.
The specific candidates being considered for this position remain uncertain. However, there have been separate links to players such as Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Luca Netz from Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Centre-back
According to Romano, the acquisition of a centre-back has been identified as a primary focus for Manchester United. Notably, the contracts of Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are nearing expiration, while Victor Lindelof has only one year left on his current deal. Additionally, the age factor comes into play, with Harry Maguire reaching the age of 31.
Romano emphasized that the pursuit of a centre-back has been a significant agenda for United since the onset of the season, aligning with the club’s objective to inject youthfulness into the position.
Furthermore, Romano did not dismiss the prospect of United securing two centre-backs, suggesting it as a viable option. He stated, “I think that could be a possibility.”
Midfield
Romano emphasizes that the primary targets for recruitment are the left-back, centre-back, and striker positions, with midfield being of secondary concern. He anticipates initiating sales proceedings before making acquisitions.
He elaborated, stating, “The prioritization of midfield acquisitions will hinge upon various factors such as budgetary constraints and the departure of current players occupying those roles.”
Uncertainties loom over the futures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, while Sofyan Amrabat is unlikely to secure a permanent transfer following the conclusion of his loan spell. Additionally, if a substantial offer were to materialize for Scott McTominay, Manchester United would likely not impede his departure.
Recently, Sir Jim Ratcliffe articulated his aspiration for a midfielder reminiscent of Paul Scholes. While such talents are rare, viable options exist that would not strain the club’s finances.
Striker
Rasmus Hojlund is poised to receive reinforcement in his position for the upcoming season, particularly as Manchester United has faced a shortage in the left flank following his recent injury absence. According to Romano, a noted source within football reporting, it has been confirmed that Martial will be departing from the club, prompting Manchester United to actively seek a replacement in the central striker position.
Romano stated, “They want to sign a striker who can compete with Hojlund at the highest level. It is always positive when you have players behind you pushing and helping you improve your level. This is the idea, to bring in an important striker, not just a back-up solution.”
Furthermore, Romano emphasized that the specific direction of Manchester United’s pursuit is still under deliberation. He mentioned Ivan Toney of Brentford, aged 28, as an example of an experienced striker the club may consider, or Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna, aged 22, as a younger alternative that would also be appealing.
“There is still something to decide internally,” Romano elaborated, “Manchester United know there will be many strikers available on the market this summer.”
