Ben White opted out of participating in this month’s friendly matches and has not been part of the England squad since the 2022 World Cup.
Rice, who will reach his 50th appearance for the national team by leading England against Belgium on Tuesday, expressed his thoughts on White: “Hopefully, with his quality and what he can offer to the team, we can welcome him back.”
England manager Gareth Southgate revealed that Arsenal’s sporting director Edu informed him of White’s decision not to be considered, but he remains uncertain about the reasons behind it.
White withdrew from England’s World Cup squad in Qatar due to personal reasons, amid reports of discontent and a falling out with assistant coach Steve Holland.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Rice described White as a great person and an exceptional footballer.
“It’s difficult to understand what’s happening, but he has made his choice and does not wish to represent England at this time,” Rice added.
He continued, “Playing for England is the ultimate honor.”
White has been impressive for Premier League leaders Arsenal this season, showcasing his versatility for Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing team.
The upcoming matches against Brazil and Belgium will be England’s final friendlies before Southgate finalizes his 23-man squad for Euro 2024, casting doubt on White’s participation in the tournament.
“Ben has the ability to excel in any position, and having a player like him is crucial,” Rice remarked.
While White could be a valuable asset for England, his current focus is not on international football.
“Hopefully, he has a change of heart,” Rice stated. “But if he’s content with his decision, that’s up to Ben.”
