Mark Hughes recently completed his signing with Bayern Munich and was scheduled to represent Wales in a Euro 1988 qualifier against Czechoslovakia in Prague.
Recalling the experience, he mentioned having dinner with Uli Hoeness, who inquired about the timing of the Wales match.
Hughes informed him that it was around midday, to which Hoeness replied, “That’s OK then, you can play in the evening as well.”
Following this conversation, Hoeness observed the game and later arranged for Hughes to join the Bayern game on the Czech border, where Borussia Monchengladbach awaited as opponents.
Despite missing the first half due to flying over the ground, Hughes arrived in time for the start of the second half. The match concluded with Bayern emerging victorious.
