Atletico Madrid forward Alvaro Morata recently disclosed his discussions with Milan directors Max Allegri, José Mourinho, and Simone Inzaghi during the preceding summer transfer window. Despite the interest from Serie A clubs, Morata ultimately chose to remain with Atletico Madrid after conversing with Diego Simeone, the team’s coach. The Spanish international, who was rumored for a return to Serie A, extended his contract with Atletico Madrid instead.
Morata recounted the circumstances, stating, “The situation was rather unique. My contract with Atletico was nearing its end, and I opted to renew it, significantly altering the financial terms and potential sale conditions due to Financial Fair Play regulations.” Speaking to Gazzetta, Morata elaborated, “Milan and several coaches contacted me due to my amicable relationships. Allegri and Mourinho had previously coached me, and I considered joining Roma to play alongside Paulo Dybala. Furthermore, my acquaintance with Inzaghi and his positive demeanor made the prospect appealing.”
When questioned about his decision to remain in La Liga instead of moving to Serie A, Morata cited contractual complications with Italian clubs. However, a conversation with Simeone prompted a change in his plans. He clarified misconceptions about his relationship with Simeone, emphasizing their excellent rapport and improved personal understanding.
Regarding his future, Morata remained open to possibilities, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of transfer windows. Despite expressing contentment with his current situation in Madrid, he highlighted the need for clarity regarding the club’s future plans, especially considering his age and family commitments.
Reflecting on Atletico Madrid’s recent success in the Champions League, Morata attributed their victory over Inter Milan in the Round of 16 to meticulous preparation and teamwork. He acknowledged Inter Milan as formidable opponents, expressing admiration for their previous achievements in European competitions and Serie A dominance. Despite winning on penalties, Morata stressed the competitiveness of the encounter, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of knockout football.
