Unai Emery expressed optimism regarding the fitness status of Ollie Watkins following the striker’s contribution to Villa’s victory over Ajax, despite being substituted due to injury. Watkins, the leading goal scorer, initiated Villa’s progress towards their first European quarter-final since 1998 by scoring the opening goal with a header in the Europa Conference League last-16 second leg on Thursday.
However, Watkins was forced to leave the pitch just after the half-hour mark due to a knee injury sustained during a challenge with goalkeeper Diant Ramaj earlier in the match. Emery characterized the injury as a superficial wound and suggested that Watkins might be fit for Sunday’s Premier League match against West Ham.
Emery stated, “Initially, it appears to be a superficial cut on the knee. There is a possibility that he could be fit for Sunday, but we will have to monitor his condition.”
Despite receiving treatment and continuing to play for over 15 minutes after his knee was bandaged, Watkins was eventually replaced after scoring the opener from Douglas Luiz’s corner. Villa went on to secure a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate victory with goals from Leon Bailey, Jhon Duran, and Moussa Diaby in the second half.
Bailey expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the positive atmosphere and the collective effort displayed. He emphasized the significance of the victory and acknowledged the hard work that has led to their current position in the competition.
Regarding Watkins’ injury, Bailey remarked, “It appeared to be a serious injury when I witnessed it, with an open wound. Although I hoped he could continue, Jhon Duran made an excellent contribution after replacing him. It was unfortunate to see him leave the pitch.”
