To penetrate the densely packed defensive line of Porto, Arsenal requires the finesse of Martin Odegaard. However, mentioning the Norwegian midfielder without acknowledging his fiery determination would be a significant oversight.
In previous seasons, when Arsenal reached crucial stages with unsuccessful performances, familiar criticisms emerged. They were labelled as a team lacking cohesion, devoid of a true leader. This critique holds some validity, considering their current captain – Odegaard – born in December 1998, is merely 25 years old.
When Manager Mikel Arteta decided to entrust the captain’s armband to Odegaard over two years ago, there were significant doubts. With his fluid style akin to flowing water, Odegaard didn’t resemble the legendary Arsenal leaders such as Tony Adams or Patrick Vieira.
Yet, if one were to choose the most deserving individual in the current Arsenal lineup, someone willing to take responsibility, shine independently, nurture teammates, and connect with fans, undoubtedly, none surpass Odegaard. Let go of preconceptions about a feeble Odegaard, merely a flawed version of Mesut Ozil. No, this is Odegaard, a proficient player, with enough character to etch his name into memory.
Against Porto, Odegaard once again excelled. While Trossard’s opening goal was aesthetically pleasing, it paled in comparison to Odegaard’s assist preceding it. Amidst a forest of blue-clad defenders, Odegaard delicately wove the ball with his teammates before using his left foot to dribble past them, then delivering the ball into the rare open space amidst the opponent’s defensive line.
It’s worth remembering that Porto’s defense, under the command of Pepe, performed admirably in both legs. Their experience proved beneficial in such tactical battles. However, facing a resilient Arsenal exerting pressure, especially with an exuberant Odegaard, Porto’s defense was breached.
However, the assist was merely one of the countless commendable acts Odegaard executed. The excited crowd at Emirates Stadium synchronized with the players on the field after each of Odegaard’s gestures. It’s been a long time since Arsenal had a captain so beloved. Odegaard relishes in that, aiming to connect with supporters to create a tremendous collective energy. This is a privilege when playing at home, yet not every team capitalizes on it.
Odegaard is clearly the “rose among thorns,” always elegant, agile, and not lacking the courage of a valiant warrior. Odegaard demonstrates far more maturity than his 25 years. Apart from incisive passes, Odegaard surprises with his tireless running throughout the 120 minutes. After every missed opportunity by Arsenal, Odegaard rallies the Emirates crowd to cheer louder for the home team.
In the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, Odegaard was the first Arsenal player to step up. His shot deceived Porto’s goalkeeper. The Norwegian midfielder’s face betrayed no tension, setting the momentum for his teammates to follow suit.
Arsenal has lacked a leader for too long, as well as a team with strong spirits. These assumptions must be dispelled when Odegaard takes the helm!
