Mikel Arteta is on the verge of finalizing an optimal lineup as Arsenal prepares for their crucial Champions League last-16 second-leg encounter against Porto on Tuesday. The Gunners are striving to reverse a one-goal deficit following their defeat in the away fixture two weeks ago.
Given Arsenal’s prolonged absence from European competition and their mediocre record during the early to mid-2010s, the upcoming match at the Emirates Stadium represents a significant occasion. Following a pivotal 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday, Arteta is poised to have nearly his entire squad at his disposal.
With the return of key players Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey, and Fabio Vieira during the 6-0 triumph against Sheffield United last week, the manager now faces minimal injury concerns. Oleksandr Zinchenko also made a comeback as a substitute against Brentford, while Takehiro Tomiyasu has resumed training alongside his teammates.
Tomiyasu, who has been sidelined due to fitness issues since the beginning of the year, is in contention to feature against Porto after resuming training at the Sobha Realty Training Ground on Monday. Arteta expressed optimism about the team’s fitness, stating, “We still have 24 hours and we’re trying to have everybody fit and available,” while providing minimal updates on Tomiyasu’s progress.
However, the potential inclusion of Tomiyasu could result in Gabriel Martinelli’s absence, as the latter was observed wearing a protective boot and using crutches after Saturday’s game. Martinelli did not participate in training ahead of the match against Porto, leaving uncertainty about his availability.
Fortunately for Arteta, the Champions League regulations permit him to name additional substitutes, including players from the B list, providing him with ample options regardless of Martinelli and Tomiyasu’s fitness status.
Jurrien Timber remains the only other injury concern, with no specific update on his availability. Although he is training with the team, his participation in the upcoming match remains uncertain, as his reintegration is being carefully managed.
