Newcastle United’s veteran defender, Kieran Trippier, recently acknowledged the interest expressed by Bayern Munich during the January transfer window, considering it as “flattering.” However, Trippier has dismissed assertions that his former teammate, Harry Kane, attempted to entice him away from St James’ Park.
Throughout the latter part of the winter transfer window, the 33-year-old was the subject of intense speculation, with Bayern Munich reportedly making two offers, including a €15 million (£12.8 million) bid, which Newcastle rejected.
Despite the allure of playing abroad and reuniting with former Tottenham Hotspur teammates Kane and Eric Dier at Bayern, Trippier opted to remain at Newcastle, emphasizing that a move to Germany at this stage of his career was not conducive to his objectives.
In an interview with Chronicle Live, Trippier disclosed the surprising nature of the transfer saga, recounting being awakened in New York at 5 am to news of Bayern Munich’s interest. He promptly contacted the Newcastle manager, reaffirming his commitment to the club and dispelling any notion of seeking a departure.
Trippier also clarified his interactions with Kane, stating that while the latter engaged in light-hearted banter about the warmer climate compared to Newcastle, there was no attempt to influence his decision.
Currently sidelined due to a calf injury, Trippier is expected to miss England’s upcoming friendly fixtures against Brazil and Belgium but remains a probable inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024. Since joining Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, Trippier has amassed 89 appearances across all competitions, contributing 10 assists in 25 Premier League outings this season.
With his contract at St James’ Park extending until June 2025, Trippier’s steadfast commitment to Newcastle United underscores his importance to the team’s aspirations.
